Molly Jo (Xiaojie Zhou)
Host workshops to empower women
Shanghai, China
I flew from Shanghai to New York for graduation—and it was absolutely worth the journey. As a mother of two, I joined the Master of Arts in Happiness Studies to become a better parent, and I’ve grown into so much more: a coach, a community leader, and someone who now supports other moms on their own journeys. The program challenged me, yes—but it was joyful. I loved the content, and even the 10 hours a week felt manageable because I believed in what I was learning. This wasn’t just an academic degree—it was personal transformation. I apply what I’ve learned every day, from my parenting to the workshops I now lead. Happiness is not abstract—it’s the fabric of daily life, and this program taught me how to live that truth fully. What surprised me most was the sense of connection. Weekly webinars, learning groups, and the retreat helped me form deep relationships with people across the world. The retreat, in particular, allowed me to turn knowledge into practice—and I’m still using the exercises months later. The professors were encouraging and kind, always making me feel supported, even when I was unsure about the tech. Now, as the program ends, I’m already looking back at the materials, not because I have to—but because I want to. I told my husband just the other day: this experience has been one of the most valuable things I’ve done. Truly, this journey has been worthwhile.
James Jim Schatzle
CEO of a Safety Training Company
New Jersey, United States
After 40 years as a paramedic, I’ve seen firsthand the toll that high-stress professions can take. I joined the Master of Arts in Happiness Studies program to better support my fellow healthcare providers—and while I set out to help others, I gained far more than I expected. The program grounded me, gave me tools to be more present, and made me a better father, leader, and friend. It opened my eyes to the importance of gratitude, helped me focus on the impact I can have today, and reminded me that true leadership starts with being in the moment. This journey has been truly worthwhile. What surprised me most was the depth of connection. I entered a global classroom and left with a real community—people I trust, can lean on, and grow with. Whether leading at home, at work, or in my place of worship, this program has strengthened every part of who I am. The professors held us to high standards, supported us through the learning curve, and truly cared. And despite my initial concerns about the technology and format, the experience was seamless and rich. We’ve already scheduled our next Zoom gathering, and I know this community will last a lifetime. Happiness may not be the currency of the world, but in this program, it’s the value that binds us.
Alicia Furlow
Vice President of Human Resources
Georgia, United States
I’ve always felt I was on a personal quest for happiness—even using “happy” in every password I created for years. That quiet inner search led me to the Master’s in Happiness Studies program, which began as a personal journey and has since evolved into a professional calling. The tools, mindset, and insights I’ve gained have not only changed the way I see the world but also how I lead and support others in my work. The program’s balance of flexibility, community, and support has been incredible. From engaging with professors like Phoebe, Enrique, Arlene, and especially Ashley—who truly read and responded to my work—to being inspired by Tal’s vision and dedication, I felt seen, heard, and uplifted throughout. I’ve connected deeply with fellow students, grown in confidence, and found clarity in how I want to serve others. Being part of the first cohort was more meaningful than I ever imagined. I genuinely feel like a better, more whole person because of this experience."

In terms of the psychological foundation, students will learn a set of particular tools and techniques, as well as some general approaches, that will accompany them and help them grow throughout the program. The two-week course includes a fair amount of preparation that primarily includes reading texts, experimenting with various practices, and watching online lectures.

GHS 510

3 Credits - 8 weeks

Integrative Leaders on Happiness

This course explores seven disciplines—Economics, Business, History, Religion, Education, Biology and Music—through the lens of fourteen influential thinkers. The work of each of the thinkers is integrative, in that it brings together theory and practice, different aspects of their chosen discipline, as well as different elements of SPIRE. They have shaped and continue to shape their discipline, while contributing both breadth and depth to our understanding of wholebeing.

GHS 520 & GHS 521

6 Credits - 16 weeks

Introduction to Happiness Studies

The course explores happiness through the lens of wholeperson wellbeing (wholebeing). Drawing on psychology, philosophy, neuroscience, economics, theology, literature and other disciplines, this survey course focuses on each of the five dimensions of wellbeing: Spiritual, Physical, Intellectual, Relational, and Emotional (SPIRE). The course is both theoretical, providing an overview of the twelve principles that define wholebeing, as well as practical, providing tools and techniques for helping individuals and groups pursue and attain higher levels of wellbeing.

GHS 530 & GHS 531

6 Credits - 16 weeks

Facilitating Happiness

Facilitating Happiness focuses primarily on tools and techniques that can help individuals and groups increase levels of wellbeing. The course introduces the topic of change, followed by twelve lectures, each delving into a particular technique or set of techniques. Each of the lectures introduces the science behind a particular technique and then provides concrete steps that you can take to make a meaningful difference in your life and the life of others. To gain a deeper grasp of the material, beyond understanding the theory, it is essential that you experiment with, and apply, the tools and techniques in your life.

GHS 540

3 Credits - 8 weeks

Philosophy & Happiness

This course explores how philosophy, considered the mother of all disciplines, informs the study of happiness. Each week, students delve into a seminal philosophical text and with the help of complementary material explore its relevance for personal and societal wellbeing. The texts that students read each week are roughly associated with one of the twelve principles; however, given the interconnectedness of all things, each text sheds light on the different elements of happiness, on wholebeing.

GHS 550

3 Credits - 8 weeks

A SPIRE Retreat

Students will spend an average of 80 minutes each day engaged in individual as well as group activities that cultivate the SPIRE elements, including but not limited to the following: Meditation, Goal setting, Yoga, Physical exercise, Breathwork, Different forms of journaling, Reminders.
